Hippos to support a worthy cause after strong start to Interclub season

1+ hour, 39+ min ago (970+ words) After a strong start to the new Central West Interclub Triathlon Series, the Dubbo Hippos are gearing up for their annual charity event. The Tri for Charity triathlon will be held on Sunday, November 30. The event brings together teams of friends, family members, or businesses to raise funds for Macquarie Home Stay, which supports families who have to travel to Dubbo for medical care. Teams of three can compete in the event. There is a $75 entry fee and the option of paying $150 to be a community sponsor, which includes business recognition on event material and social media. All money raised goes directly to Macquarie Home Stay and every dollar raised up to $3000 will be matched by Findex, the local financial services business. How a coal miner's son became a football icon and community pillar for popular sport

1+ day, 3+ hour ago (693+ words) THE list of community involvement is a long one for the late Bill Lamberton, who played a pivotal role in numerous clubs and associations in the Central West. With a passion for soccer and pride in his Scottish heritage, Mr Lamberton was heavily involved with multiple Bathurst football clubs and also various events in the region celebrating Scotland's culture. But he was more than just a founding member or club president to most who knew him. He was a caring man, with a friendly face and a loving soul, who will be sorely missed by the Bathurst and surrounding communities following his death on September 25, 2025. Born in Scotland on August 3, 1937, William Lamberton was one of five children to parents John and Marion. For the first few years of his life, Mr Lamberton's father worked as a coal miner. However, upon…...

Historical shift on the cards as league bosses come together: here are the key issues

3+ week, 4+ day ago (414+ words) Better board organisation, an overhaul to grade eligibility rules and the potential expansion of the women's tackle competition will be on the agenda when top footy heads meet on Sunday. Officials of the Peter McDonald Premiership will meet at Wellington, a halfway point for clubs across the competition, as discussions get underway for the 2026 season. All 12 teams from the 2025 season are expected to compete again next year, with PMP chairman Bob Walsh confirming there will be a shift at board level ahead of the new season. "We'll be looking at how the board is set up, potentially removing the four from Group 10 and four from Group 11 rule and having the attitude that we're just PMP," he said. Both Group 10 and Group 11 merged in 2022, with the former having run its own separate club competition since 1947 and the latter having run its…...

How an old newsagency fueled TikTok soccer star Joe Kay's new quest

3+ week, 6+ day ago (444+ words) Growing up at the old Millthorpe Newsagency and General Store, Joe Kay was always surrounded by magazines. His parents used to run the newsagency downstairs on Pym Street, while the family lived upstairs, and Mr Kay would often be gifted a magazine. One of his favourites was the FIFA World Cup ones, which would go in-depth about all the teams and star players. It's those childhood memories and experiences that have paved the way for Mr Kay to make a dream a reality. Last month, the boy from the Central West published Sokkah 25, a magazine that previews all the teams and key players competing in the Australian Championship, the nation's new second-tier soccer competition. While it has been something he has been working on for over a year, Mr Kay admits it was a big challenge, considering his lack of…...

New leader, new thinking: the Spacemen's plan for success beyond the premiership

4+ week, 13+ hour ago (729+ words) Andy Thomas would love to see the Parkes Spacemen win a premiership every season. What club president wouldn't? But the incoming supremo at the Spacemen knows success is about much more than that. "If you measure the success of the club off the premierships, you're going to send yourself mad," he said. "It's an unachievable goal, at the end of the day. It's very hard for a club to come through and set their margins and their goals on the premiership. "My target, really, is giving back to the community, getting the community to come through the gate and supporting the players. "If we can get those things right, the rest flows from there and winning becomes a by-product of that." The Spacemen have always had a strong connection to the community, but the club's new president wants that strengthened…...
